Under guidance distributed on Wednesday, the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) implemented the Attorney General’s suggestions by instructing their staff to automatically reject applications from domestic violence victims seeking asylum. “This instruction could be a death sentence for thousands of women who courageously flee their home countries in an effort to escape horrific abuse,” said Kim Gandy, President and CEO of the National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV).

It is critical that LGBTQ survivors have access to inclusive and identity-affirming services.

NNEDV was shocked and disheartened that the U.S. government intentionally inflicted irreparable harm on the most vulnerable, including those fleeing sexual and domestic violence, and who were seeking safety for themselves and their children in the United States. The Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) practice of detaining children and separating families seeking refuge has been both cruel and inhumane.
