Washington, DC – For nearly 40 years, victims and advocates across the United States have observed Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) each October. DVAM is a time to spark conversations, raise awareness, honor victims and survivors, and advocate for the funding and policy solutions that can make a difference.
Today, the National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV), in partnership with the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence, kicks off the sixth year of the national #Every1KnowsSome1 DVAM campaign.
Domestic violence is not a rare or private problem; it is an epidemic. Abuse impacts victims from all walks of life, devastates families and communities, and creates trauma that can last for generations.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:
- 34% of women and 17% of men in the U.S. have reported contact sexual violence, physical violence, and/or stalking by a partner.
- 2% of women and 22.3% of men in the U.S. have reported psychological aggression by a partner.
These rates are often higher – and funding and support are often scarce – for marginalized victims, including victims of color, victims in the LGBTQ+ community, victims with disabilities, and immigrant victims.
“Everyone knows someone impacted by domestic violence, and many of us are victims and survivors ourselves. We all deserve to be safe, have access to resources, and raise our children in healthy, supportive communities,” said Tonia Moultry-Pace, NNEDV Interim President & CEO. “Victims and survivors have always believed that a better world is possible when we come together to build it, and their strength continues to fuel our shared movement. I invite everyone to get involved during Domestic Violence Awareness Month and beyond.”
