No matter how strong our referral networks are, it can often be challenging to help domestic violence survivors get the legal advice they need when they need it.
Many non-legal advocates have experience with and knowledge of legal systems, and they know that the best practice is to consult with an attorney or legal expert. After all, every survivor has different circumstances that can affect their legal options.
However, actually getting to speak with a legal expert in a timely manner can be tough for various reasons. Many survivors don’t have funds to hire a private attorney, and local legal services organizations often lack enough resources to take every case referred to them. Sometimes, a survivor can’t connect with the local legal organizations during business hours to do an intake.
Other times, a survivor may need help with a case in a different state, where the advocate isn’t familiar with the local court procedures and doesn’t have legal referrals available. Additionally, survivors often need answers right away, but many legal services can take weeks or even months to provide an intake. Also, some legal professionals may not understand the dynamics of abuse, leaving them unable to best address survivors’ questions and concerns.
NNEDV’s WomensLaw team steps up to address these needs. WomensLaw.org offers plain-language information in English and Spanish about the law and related topics that survivors commonly need help with, like custody, orders of protection, and safety planning for court appearances. Through the free and confidential WomensLaw Email Hotline, survivors, advocates, and loved ones can ask questions and receive personalized legal information and referrals.
With so much offered on the website, we are hosting a webinar for advocates to learn more about this one-of-a-kind resource:
