WomensLaw
WomensLaw.org was founded in Brooklyn, NY, in February 2000 by Elizabeth Martin, with the help of lawyers, teachers, advocates, and web designers interested in using the power of the Internet to help survivors of domestic violence. The mission of WomensLaw is to provide easy-to-understand legal information and resources to anyone living with or escaping domestic violence, sexual assault, or stalking.
Today, WomensLaw.org gets almost 4 million unique visitors annually and provides referrals and information to more than 6,000 individuals through the Email Hotline. WomensLaw joined NNEDV in 2010 after many years of partnering on technology safety and confidentiality issues.
WomensLaw has two components: WomensLaw.org and the WomensLaw Email Hotline.
The website provides thousands of pages of legal information written specifically for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking, especially for those who are going to be representing themselves pro se in court. The legal information, revised yearly for legislative changes, is state-specific and written in plain language so that people can comprehend it without the help of a lawyer.
We also have federal legal information regarding immigration remedies for victims, DV in the military, information on federal gun laws, and more. The website also provides non-legal information about different types of abuse, safety planning, tips for working with lawyers and preparing for court, legal and non-legal resources, and much more. More than two-thirds of the website has been translated into Spanish, and new information is added and updated daily.
The WomensLaw Email Hotline and Chat:
The WomensLaw Email Hotline is a safe, confidential, accessible service through which victims, friends, family, and advocates can request personalized information and anonymous support around issues related to the law and domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking. Licensed attorneys respond or review each message in English or Spanish, tailoring responses to answer each person’s specific needs. After WomensLaw’s initial reply, users can schedule a chat with an attorney to discuss any follow-up questions in real time.
