Empowering Survivors for 25 Years

2025 is an exciting year for us as we celebrate the 25th anniversary of WomensLaw and the 35th anniversary of our umbrella organization, the National Network to End Domestic Violence!

Founded in 2000, WomensLaw has been a pioneer in making plain-language, state- and territory-specific legal information and resources about domestic violence available online. Since then, WomensLaw.org has become a hub for victims and survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking, as well as for advocates and others seeking assistance.

WomensLaw.org now has thousands of pages of legal information about restraining orders, custody, divorce, housing protections, immigration, gun laws, and much more. Each state-specific legal section is written by a lawyer and reviewed and updated annually to account for legislative changes. We also have thousands of pages of non-legal information, including pages about abuse, tips for working with lawyers and preparing for court, listings for telephone hotlines and legal and non-legal resources for every state, courthouse contact information, and links to download court forms. We also have practical videos and quick guides.

Today, over two-thirds of WomensLaw.org, including the legal information for 38 states and territories, has been translated into Spanish, with more to come in 2025. Through our bilingual WomensLaw Email Hotline and chat feature, we answer questions and offer personalized information and referrals in English and Spanish to thousands of survivors, many of whom represent themselves in court. Survivors often tell us that they appreciate our staff and volunteers’ detailed, compassionate replies, which help them understand their options, exercise their rights, achieve better outcomes in court, and find safety, healing, and justice for themselves and their families.

As we reflect on this milestone, we are grateful for our former and current staff, volunteers, consultants, and organizational partners who have helped craft specialized content on WomensLaw.org and raise awareness about our resources. This includes Esperanza United, our partners in the Reimagining Enhanced Access and Capacity of the Hotline (REACH) Project that includes this blog! We are also thankful for the financial support of funders and individuals, which has allowed us to keep growing, improving, and reaching more survivors, including those in under-resourced communities.

We invite you to visit our special anniversary page, Empowering Survivors for 25 years, to learn more about the history of WomensLaw and to help support our work.
