Organization Overview

The DC Coalition Against Domestic Violence (DCCADV, The Coalition) is a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to creating a community where domestic violence is replaced with human dignity. DCCADV is the only federally recognized domestic violence coalition in the District of Columbia and serves as a resource for the thousands of adults and children experiencing domestic violence each year, as well as the local organizations that serve them. Our fundamental goals are to provide leadership and support, build awareness and enhance systemic response to survivors of domestic violence and their children.

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Policy Director, the Policy Attorney will contribute to the development of the organization’s policy agenda and implementing advocacy initiatives focused on legislative and systems change that support survivors of domestic violence.

Roles and Responsibilities

Specific position responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Perform legal research and writing to develop analysis and advocacy tools for proposed and potential policy and legislative changes
  • Draft talking points, testimony, briefing papers, presentation documents, fact sheets, letters to the editor, action alerts, and other public materials regarding domestic violence policy issues
  • Provide testimony on proposed legislation and/or resolutions impacting survivors of domestic violence
  • Track and follow all relevant legislation impacting survivors of domestic and dating violence
  • Educate and brief District of Columbia Councilmembers, Administration staff, and other public officials on domestic violence policy issues
  • Participate in the planning and implementation of organizational initiatives, projects, and systemic advocacy efforts
  • Participate in and support the Coalition’s Policy Task Force
  • Support and engage in the Coalition’s short- and long-term policy and funding agenda in collaboration with Coalition membership, community partners, and the Coalition’s leadership
  • As requested, provide technical assistance to Coalition member programs on policy, legislative, systems advocacy, and legal issues
  • As directed, represent the Coalition in external working groups
  • Produce policy related training curricula and training materials and conduct legal and policy related trainings for diverse audiences

Related skills and experience

  • Demonstrated knowledge of domestic violence dynamics, prevalence, and community impact
  • Demonstrated agreement and comfort with addressing the Coalition’s collective work through a racial and social justice lens—DCCADV recognizes that in order to truly address and ultimately prevent domestic violence it is critical to address systemic and racial inequities
  • Commitment to the eradication of gender-based violence
  • Juris Doctorate degree required
  • Previous experience working in the D.C. judicial system, preferred
  • At least 3 years of post-graduate work, preferably working with survivors of gender-based violence
  • Excellent communication, writing, and public speaking skills
  • Strong critical thinking and analytical skills
  • Ability to work autonomously and as a team member
  • Candidate must be organized and able to handle multiple projects and deadlines

Additional Information

  • Applicant must be willing and able to travel in and around DC, Maryland and Northern Virginia for work purposes
  • Occasional evening and weekend hours may be required
