Requirements
– Bachelor’s degree in a related field

Description:

Located in St. Paul, Minnesota, Women’s Advocates is known to many as the first shelter in the nation for women and children escaping domestic violence. Today, Women’s Advocates offers a robust continuum of safety services, including violence prevention education, phone-based crisis intervention, emergency help for victims escaping violence, and sustained safety, advocacy and housing support for survivors as they begin their journey to a safer, more independent life. By helping Women’s Advocates meet its fundraising, communications and strategic growth goals, the Director of Development and Communications contributes significantly to Women’s Advocates’ mission — walking with victim/survivors and our community to break the cycle of domestic violence.

The position is responsible for the organization’s:

Development and fundraising program, including major gifts, foundation and government grants, planned giving, events, annual appeals, and comprehensive campaigns, and
Organizational communications, including social media, website, newsletter, annual reports, press releases, and literature to support special appeals and campaigns.

The successful candidate will bring a strong reputation and existing relationships in the fundraising field, as well as the tools and capabilities necessary to expand and diversify the organization’s donor base and pipeline and raise Women’s Advocates’ profile in the Twin Cities market and beyond. This position cultivates an ever-widening circle of relationships with a range of individuals, corporations, foundations, and government entities in support of the organization’s mission and goals.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the position oversees the work of outside contractors as needed and supervises a Development and Communications Coordinator. The position works closely with the Resource Development Committee of Women’s Advocates’ Board of Directors to establish and operationalize fundraising plans, projects and goals. As a member of the organization’s Support (leadership) Team, the Director participates in planning and decision-making affecting the entire organization and works in close partnership with the organization’s directors, managers, and supervisors on the organization’s strategic goals, including operationalizing the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion across our work. The position requires an experienced leader with a significant background in fund development (private and government) and communications, publications, and social media.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Fund Development – 70% of time
Build and maintain relationships with individuals and entities positioned to support Women’s Advocates’ fund development goals, including foundations, corporations, government entities, and other nonprofit organizations.

Coordinate and oversee grant-seeking from foundations, corporations, and government entities at the local, state and national level. This includes research, coordinating with and collecting input from other Women’s Advocates staff, proposal writing, reporting, and documentation.

Build and maintain relationships with existing and prospective outside contractors capable of providing quality services to meet Women’s Advocates’ needs for proposal development, event planning and execution, and other projects as needed.

Cultivate and maintain relationships with Women’s Advocates’ donors through regular contact and effective, inclusive, and friendly communication.

Oversee planning and execution of fundraising events, activities, and appeals.
Collaborate with the Executive Director in growing a major gifts program, including identification, cultivation, and solicitation of major donors.

Maintain regular communication and engagement with Board Development Committee chair and members; provide staff support for Development Committee meetings.

Oversee creation of publications and other communications to support fundraising activities.
Coordinate and provide orientation and tours for community members and donors, as appropriate.

Communications – 30% of time
Effectively communicate, across a range of platforms, Women’s Advocates’ mission, vision, values, and goals to key audiences and stakeholders.

Cultivate and maintain contacts in various local and regional media outlets.

Serve as first point of contact and organizational spokesperson for media inquiries.

Develop an annual communications plan for Women’s Advocates with input from the Support Team, Development Team, and other critical stakeholders.

Develop and execute marketing and public relations plans and activities.

Write and distribute press releases and speeches as needed and appropriate.

Photo editing and design as needed and appropriate.

Oversee Women’s Advocates’ social media and web presence.

Oversee development and production of print and written materials for the organization, including marketing materials, e-newsletter, annual report, and other branded materials, ensuring a consistent organizational identity across materials and platforms.

Oversee volunteer recruitment, training, and placement in collaboration with the Development & Communications Coordinator.
