NNEDV condemns policy proposals to discriminate against transgender and non-binary individuals

October 22, 2018

The Administration’s proposals to narrowly define gender as biological, ignoring the realities of transgender and gender non-binary individuals, are disgraceful, ill-conceived and would have far-reaching negative consequences.  The proposals also threaten hard-won advances in civil rights laws prohibiting gender-based discrimination.

We are particularly concerned about the impact on transgender and gender non-binary survivors of domestic and sexual violence who already face disproportionate rates of violence, as well as barriers to justice and safety. Inaccurate and narrow definitions of gender will further alienate and endanger survivors.

We join many allies in condemning these proposals and stand in firm and proud support of the rights of transgender and gender non-binary individuals.
