unitetoendvawposterIn 1991, the United Nation’s General Assembly designated November 25 as International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. For more information on this day, click here.

Violence against women is an international epidemic. According to the United Nations, up to 70 percent of women will experience violence in their lifetimes. According to the World Bank, women ages 15-44 are more at risk from rape and domestic violence than cancer, car accidents, war, and malaria.

The most common form of violence against women is physical, sexual, or emotional violence by an intimate partner. In the United States, more than 3 women are murdered by their husbands or boyfriends every day.

Governments, international organizations and NGOs are invited to organize activities on November 25 to raise public awareness and support survivors of domestic and sexual violence. The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women also launches the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence, which runs through 10 December, Human Rights Day.
